One of Costa Rica’s earliest settlements
The famous port city of Puntarenas has long been a key player in Costa Rica’s ever-growing economy. The port town began to flourish during the 1880�s with the oppenig of a railroad line connecting the town to Esparza, one of the most Costa Rica’s colonized regions.

By 1910 railroad connected Puntarenas to the Central Valley. Today Puntarenas maintains its status as the leading port in Costa Rica, play host to commercial shipping entities as well as to cruise lines from around the globe. Puntarenas meaning �sand point� is well known as a vacation mecca. Its fame declined during the 1970�s.
Today the town is once again receiving attention as more and more companies are rediscovering the position side of Puntarenas. The boardwalk and miles of calm beaches attract a family crowd. Puntarenas is also home to Costa Rica’s only aquarium.
