For many years, different leaders took over the Costa Rican government by force. But in 1948, Costa Rican president Utilio Ulate replaced the Costa Rican army with a national guard to try and make peace for the country. These days ticos pride themselves on having the most peaceful country in Central America.

Costa RicaThe Costa Rican national guard is made up of about 7,000 men and women. You can pick them out by their green uniforms and pickup trucks. The national guard acts like a police force for the entire country. Guardsmen and women help to keep the peace at national events and may defend the country against an unlikely attack from another country. Not having an army allows the Costa Rican government to spend money on health care and education instead of Oil Supplying troops with expend live weapons and equipment.
