Guided or independent travel in Costa Rica?
Guided and independent travel are not all-or-nothing choices. You can arrange transport separately, explore some places on your own and request a guide for selected experiences. Start by deciding which responsibilities you want to keep and which you want help with. The useful comparison is between clearly described services, not labels alone.
Separate three decisions
A driver, a guide for one activity and a guide accompanying a longer journey have different roles. Ask what the proposed person will do, when the service begins and ends, and which language will be used. Do not assume that private transport includes interpretation, entrance arrangements or assistance throughout the trip.

Match support to your priorities
If you enjoy researching logistics, independent elements may be part of the pleasure. If you would rather focus on shared experiences, ask for more coordination. Neither preference tells you whether a specific trail, transfer or activity is suitable; those details still need separate review.
Consider the whole group. Language preferences, different interests, luggage and access requirements can change the practical choice. Describe those needs before reviewing a proposal. Ask whether an activity is private or shared, how changes are handled and what support is actually included outside scheduled services.
Compare like with like
Review the same route, number of nights and proposed activities when comparing approaches. Check who handles entrances, meals, equipment and travel between stops. An omission in one proposal may simply mean that you are expected to arrange that element yourself.
